What Will You Learn?

  • The first section introduces the definition of living organisms and the importance of biodiversity. You will learn why biodiversity is important for the survival of living organisms and how it affects our planet's health. The need for the classification of living organisms is also discussed in this section.
  • The second section covers an overview of the three domains of life: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. You will learn about the characteristics and examples of each domain, and how they differ from each other.
  • The third section covers the definition of taxonomy and systematics and their importance in organizing and studying living organisms. The taxonomical hierarchy, including the kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species, is also introduced. The concept of species and its significance in classification and binomial nomenclature are also discussed.
  • The fourth section covers the role of museums, zoos, herbaria, and botanical gardens in studying taxonomy, the importance of specimen collections, and their preservation. Techniques for collecting, preserving, and studying specimens are also introduced.
  • The fifth section covers an overview of the five kingdom classification system: Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. You will learn about the salient features, examples, and classification of Monera, Protista, and Fungi into major groups, as well as an introduction to lichens, viruses, and viroids.
  • The sixth section covers the salient features and classification of plants into major groups: Algae, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms, and Angiosperms. You will learn about the three to five distinguishing features and examples of each category. The detailed study of Angiosperms: classification up to class, characteristic features, and examples is also included in this section.
  • The seventh section covers the salient features and classification of non-chordate animals up to phylum level, and the salient features and classification of chordate animals up to class level. Examples of each phylum and class with their characteristic features are also discussed.
